Indian Railways' plans: Trains set to become safer, will reach on time
From replacing aging tracks, doubling & electrification of line, use of new technologies like hoverboards and GPS and induction of new LHB coaches, the railways has been on a restructuring spree.
Indian Railways has in the past few years made massive changes in its infrastructure to make the passengers' journey safer as well as to reduce the delay of trains. From replacing aging tracks, doubling & electrification of line, use of new technologies like hoverboards and GPS and induction of new LHB coaches, the railways has been on a restructuring spree. In the last one year, railways has taken various steps to improve its operations. Check some of the key initiatives here:
1. Anti-Collision Device: Indian Railways has planned to provide Automatic Train Protection (ATP) conforming to ETCS level-2 standards on the entire Indian Railway Broad Gauge (BG) network. This will provide technical aid to Loco Pilots for avoiding Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD). This will help railways avoid the possible collision of trains.
2. Integrated Security System: The public transporter has identified 202 railway stations for the purpose of installation of the Integrated Security System (ISS) to strengthen surveillance mechanism at these stations. This will ensure the safety and security of not only passengers but of the railway properties as well.
3. Data Loggers: Railways have linked the system of recording arrival and departure of trains through Control Office Application (COA) with Data Loggers at 42 stations for capturing accurate train information. A data logger, also known as recorder, is an electronic device that records data over time by sensing the status of relays. It will help the railways make trains more punctual.

Besides, various steps have been initiated country-wide to improve punctuality such as prioritization of preventive maintenance of assets to minimize asset failures, capacity enhancement projects by construction of additional loop lines at stations, construction of third line corridors, automatic signaling, construction of low height subway to replace level crossings, Rail Under Bridges and Rail Over Bridges etc. Recently, the railways has claimed to have eliminated all unmanned level crossings on its broad-gauge network.
