Karnataka drama: All eyes on Yeddyurappa's letter to Governor Vajubhai Vala

After three days of Adrenalin filled thriller, all eyes are fixed on the final scene that will be played out on Friday in the Supreme Court circling around BS Yeddyurappa’s letter which prompted Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala to extend invitation to the BJP to form the government. Deciding to hear the plea filed by Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing on behalf of the JD(S)-Congress combine, in the dead of the night, the three judge bench of the Apex Court had directed the Centre to place before it the two communications of Yeddyurappa to the Governor, saying their perusal was necessary to decide the case.

Congress and JD(S) are confident, at least on the face of it, that the content of the communications will expose both the BJP and Governor’s foul play. Extending salutations to the Supreme Court, veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram who is also a senior lawyer said, "Yeddyurappa's letter to the Governor will seal his fate. There is no mention of a number bigger than 104. The Governor's invitation does not mention any number at all."

Congress spokesperson Singhvi also praised the Supreme Court lavishly for sitting more than three-and-a-half hours till Thursday morning.

"Patient hearing par excellence. Though no stay, bench made swearing-in fully subject to further orders. In a sense Yeddyurappa's oath is provisional. Supreme Court can change interim order tomorrow after seeing documents. Pre-ponement of floor test also open," Singhvi said on Twitter.

Joining the battle against BJP, senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani also moved the Supreme Court in his personal capacity against the decision of Karnataka governor on Thursday.

"The governor's order is a gross abuse of the constitutional power and this has brought disrepute to the constitutional office he has been holding," said Jethmalani.

However, a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice D Y Chandrachud directed him to make his submissions before the three Judge Bench which had heard the Singhvi's plea in the early hours.

Wary of Governor's alleged move to nominate an Anglo-Indian member to the assembly thereby increasing the strength of the assembly to help BJP during the floor test, the Congress also filed an interim application on Thursday.

Both the fresh pleas are likely to be heard on Friday along with the main petition of the JD(S)-Congress combine.
