Mission Power: India may see power surplus by 2016-17
Power minister, Piyush Goyal said to a question asked in Rajya Sabha, " India will have surplus power of 1.1% in terms of energy and 2.6% in terms of peak during 2016-17.
On Tuesday, Ministry of power released data on power situation in the country.
As per the data released, the power deficit in the country, during the year 2015-16 in terms of energy and peak deficit was around 2.1% and 3.2% respectively.

Since last two years, the power demand has grown by nearly 7.03%, and this would be first time where there would be a power surplus situation in the country, added Goyal.
During the previous financial year (FY16), energy requirement was around During the year 2015, energy requirement was around 1,114,408 million units, where as the availability of it was only till 1,090,850 million units, a power deficit of nearly 23,558 million units or 2.1%.
In terms of perk hour the demand was for 153,366 mega watts with just 148,463 mega watts achieved. Thus resulting into power deficit of 4,903 mega watts or 3.2%.
Considering the states, Uttar Pradesh was majorly in power deficit in both energy and peak as on March, 2016. The state was in deficit with 12.5% in energy and 14.6% in peak.
