Oil-filled room heaters to rescue: How North Delhi fought off record winters

Oil filled radiator room heaters and heat convectors came to the rescue as a large part of North India, including the national capital region tackled record winters. Delhi witnessed its coldest winters in about 119 years while some places in the desert state of Rajasthan witnessed near-zero temperatures. This led to an increase in the sales of room heaters as well as water heaters, said Sandeep Tewari, President – Marketing Head Usha International.

"The cold waves sweeping North India had led to a spurt in the sale of heating appliances in the country. In fact, there was a marked increase both in the sales of room heaters as well as water heaters, due to the most severe winter in the past many decades," Sandeep Tewari, President – Marketing Head Usha International said.

"Back to back, it was the 2nd consecutive bumper year for us as far as sales of heating appliances is concerned. Infact, Usha also strengthened its portfolio in the heating segment with its range of water and room heaters. The exceptional winter season led to an increase in the demand for heating appliances and it surged by almost 50%," he said.

The demand was on the higher side for oil filled radiator room heaters and heat convectors, as they remained the most preferred option for users. Overall, the sale of room heaters and geysers soared up by almost 150 per cent in December 2020. The demand was so high that at one point, retailers were struggling to cope up with it. Branded products were more in demand during the season.

"We witnessed a distinct trend viz. consumers, who now a days prefer to buy branded products; in the branded products too they are moving up the ladder and going for premium models, in line with their growing aspirations," Tewari said.

He said that the company had added a whole range of innovatively designed heating appliances to meet cosumer demand, strengthening its existing range of room heaters.
