RRB Group D Recruitment: You must have read that Ph.D. degree holders had applied for peon jobs in Karnataka last year. Every time a government recruitment starts, this type of news gets reported. The similar trend is being seen in the ongoing recruitment by the Indian Railways. As per various reports, over 82 lakh engineers and post-graduates have applied for the Group D or Level 1 posts notified by the railways. The railways has already declared the exam results and are in the next stage of selecting final candidates.
Last year, the Railway Recruitment Board had notified 62,907 Level 1 posts. The posts include gangman, cabinman, helpers, keyman, trackman and welders among others. Candidates who were eligible to apply for the post must have passed the secondary examination and should have a certificate from the National Council of Vocational Training or ITI, or have a National Apprenticeship Certificate.
Around 2 crore candidates applied for the posts out of which 82 lakhs were said to be engineering graduates and postgraduates in various subjects. A TOI report said that 4.91 lakh undergraduate engineers, 41,000 postgraduate engineers, and 86,000 management UG and PG candidates had applied for the posts.
However, the numbers may not indicate unemployment figures as people want to get into a government job for better pay and job security in India. It's also quite possible that many people who had applied for the posts already have a job.

With one after another pay commissions, the salary of the central and government employees have been on the rise. After a few years in service, the salary of a government peon stands around Rs 50,000, which is quite higher, than many of those working in the private sector. Therefore, government jobs are the cynosure of all eyes.
