Cheaper priced 'Made in India' Nokia 3310 phones to be available by June
HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela confirmed in the report to partner with Foxconn to manufacture Nokia units in the country.
The re-launch of the iconic feature phone the Nokia 3310 on Sunday has been one of the highlights of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona. While the launched at the price of Euro 49, which approximately amounts to Rs 3,500 in India, HMD Global the parent company had a 'Make in India' plan for the manufacture of the feature phone along with Android based smartphones that it unveiled.
This means that the cost of the Nokia 3310 and Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphones will be lower prices. These phones are expected to go on sale by June this year, according to an Economic Times report.
HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela confirmed in the report to partner with Foxconn to manufacture Nokia units in the country. This will reduce the cost of the Nokia phones significantly in comparison to the price that they are available globally.
Nummela said that all phones that are sold in India will be made in India.
While the conversion of the global price of the Nokia 3310 will put it at approximately Rs 3,500, but with the feature phone being manufactured in India it will cost just under Rs 3,000. Most feature phones in India are priced under Rs 3,000 and for the phone to regain success in a market that is price sensitive it has to be competitively priced.
For instance, Samsung's feature phones are priced substantially lower in comparison to Nokia 3310 ranging from Rs 1,500 onwards to Rs 3,000. Similarly, Lava feature phones are priced Rs 1,300 onwards and go up to Rs 3,000. In fact, Intex has the lowest priced feature phone the Intex Eco 105 priced at just Rs 819.
HMD Global on Sunday unveiled three other smartphones apart from the Nokia 3310 at MWC 2017, this includes the Nokia 3 which is priced at about Rs 9,805, Nokia 5 at Rs 13,332 and Nokia 6 at Rs 16,154.
Nummela said that they have disclosed the global average prices, but he expects them to be lower in India.
The company said that the Nokia 3310 has a month long stand-by and can deliver 22 hours of talk-time, ten times more than the original. It also comes with a 2 mega pixel rear camera and modern version of the classic 'Snake' game.
