EXPLAINED - The tech inside MG ZS EV, India's first internet car powered by i-SMART technology
Morris Garages Motor India is set to launch India's first internet car powered by i-SMART technology - the MG ZS EV, on 5th December 2019. On Monday, the carmaker showcased the tech used inside the car and hinted what it could be capable of doing.

On Monday, the carmaker showcased the tech used inside the car and hinted what it could be capable of doing. The i-SMART EV 2.0 unit inside the ZS EV allows the users to connect the car to home or office WiFi networks, a segment first. It will come with an embedded Machine to Machine (M2M) eSIM developed with Unlimit and based on Cisco’s Jasper platform, with Airtel as the telecom partner.
6-core processor and 5G platform
The i-SMART EV 2.0’s hardware unit is powered by an all-new 6-core processor. Along with this, the platform is Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) and 5G ready. It has been developed in association with Unlimit (A Reliance ADAG company).
External Wi-Fi
As mentioned above, the i-SMART EV 2.0 comes with an inbuilt embedded SIM providing internet onboard but it can also be connected to an external Wi-Fi connection. This could be home network or mobile hotspot. It allows users to derive maximum internet speed for operation of the infotainment system.

The MG ZS EV’s i-SMART EV 2.0 system comes with dedicated EV features that provide real-time insights such as:
- Vehicle charging information and range
- Battery charge less alarm at less than 30%
- CO2 emission saved
- 360 Spider: Finds charging stations when remaining range is less than 50 KM
Voice Assistant
The MG ZS EV also comes with a cloud-enabled, AI-based Voice Assistant powered by Nuance Communications which can understand about 100 voice commands to control various features and functions of the vehicle, like “Open the Sunroof” and “Find me the nearest charging station”. This assistant has been developed for the Indian market to recognize Indian-accented speech.
Over the air updates and apps
The car will get real-time software updates of the infotainment system at regular intervals directly without the customer having to visit the service center. It also comes with premium Gaana account as well as AccuWeather app. There is also pre-loaded entertainment music and video content on ZS EV which will be refreshed and pushed directly to the head unit by the company at regular intervals.
The customers will also get a downloadable i-SMART EV 2.0 app for their mobile phones. The app, when fired up, scans the car, and instantly presents information on its location, tire pressure status etc.
Privacy
Lastly, consumer data will be stored securely in MG’s Cloud, powered by Microsoft Azure, within India.
