Google launches TikTok rival Tangi: Here is how to download and use

Google has launched it own short video platform amid the rising popularity of Chinese app TikTok. Called Tangi, the app was launched on Thursday evening under Google's experimental lab Area 120. The app is very similar to TikTok and allows users to make short videos and upload them on the platform. The only difference is that while TikTok users can make both 15 and 60 second videos, Tangi would only support the latter.

The name Tangi comes from the words TeAch aNd GIve and "tangible"—things you can make. The app comes with a “Try It” feature that allows the viewers to recreate the video they are watching.

"Last year, our small team within Area 120, Google’s lab for experimental projects, started building Tangi. It’s an experimental social video sharing app with quick DIY videos that help people learn new things every day. Tangi is where creative people can get new ideas and connect with other passionate people like them. The name is inspired by the words TeAch aNd GIve and "tangible"—things you can make," The search engine giant said in a blog post.

In a strange decision though, the app is only available for iOS users right now and not on Google's own Android operating system. Also, you can download it on the basis of invites. To receive one, you need to fill a Google form. Users can watch through videos on the web version of the app too.

"We’ve been working with creators who already make these kinds of videos, so that Tangi can become a place where they have a voice to inspire other makers. Tangi’s focus on creativity and community is the biggest draw for them. They’ve been able to experiment with new ways to take their creativity to the next level. For example, Holly shows easy DIY projects and Rachel tells amazing stories through her portrait drawings," the blog added.

The platform will allow users to comment on each other's videos, like them and more.

"We hope to see you “try out” some of our New Year’s and Valentine’s Day projects. Upload is not available to everyone yet—but you can join the waitlist," Google said.
