WhatsApp is fighting a long battle to make the platform better and more secure for everyone. In the latest bid to ensure compliance and stop wrongdoing, it is reportedly taking the extreme step of actually banning users from across the world for 'suspicious’ group names. Several users complained about the same on Reddit. According to a thread on the platform, a user was banned after he changed a university group name to something that was indicative of child sexual abuse. WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo was one of the first to identify this.
"It seems like it's easy to be banned from WhatsApp, using a suspicious name as group subject. In this case the group subject did not reflect with the content of the group (probably it was changed for joking) and the entire group was immediately banned," it tweeted.
Other users who reported the ban were involved in dark, edgy humor causing collateral damage. These users have been hit with automated responses telling them that they violated WhatsApp terms of use whether the group name actually reflects the content within or not.

In February, WhatsApp released a whitepaper on how it fights spam and abuse without reading your messages. The instant messaging platform said that it scans content such as unencrypted photos and group information. "We rely on advanced machine learning technology to evaluate group information to identify and ban members of groups suspected of sharing Child Exploitative Imagery (CEI),” WhatsApp said on its blog.
How to make sure you are not banned by WhatsApp?
First of all, you should avoid any questionable media on the platform, be it text messages, videos or audio files. On the technical front, if you are the admin on a group, block anyone from changing that group's info. This would ensure that pranksters do not play around with the group and get everyone in it banned.
- For this, you need to open WhatsApp on your phone, and head to the group you moderate.
- Tap on the group name, and then go to Group Settings > Edit group info.
- Choose Only Admins option.
