The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has outlined its ambitious plans for the future, including a manned mission to the moon by 2040, further progress on the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, and successful completion of the Aditya L1 solar mission's initial phase. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath made these announcements during the Gujarat Vibrant Global Summit 2024, highlighting India's growing capabilities in space exploration.

While addressing a press conference after the successful launch of the PSLV-C58 XPoSat mission, ISRO Chairman S Somnath said the year 2024 is going to be Gaganyaan year. He further informed about the ISRO’s upcoming missions. He said, “2024 is going to be the year for Gaganyaan readiness...Along with that, we will have a helicopter-based drop test to prove the Parachute systems, there will be multiple drop tests. We also will have many hundreds of valuation tests. So it is going to be a Gaganyaan year. Along with that, we are going to have launches of GSLV”.

PM Modi chaired a high-level meeting to assess the progress of India’s Gaganyaan Mission. The high-level meeting was to outline the future of India’s space exploration endeavours. The Department of Space presented a comprehensive overview of the Gaganyaan mission. Around 20 major tests, including 3 uncrewed missions of Human Rated Launch Vehicle are planned. The first demonstration flight of the Crew Escape System Test Vehicle is scheduled on October 21.

India is all set to commence a series of preliminary test flights in preparation for the Gaganyaan mission, its first human spaceflight mission. The inaugural test, known as the Test Vehicle Development Flight (TV-D1), is scheduled to take place on October 21 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The test will assess the performance of the crew module and crew escape system, which are critical components of the Gaganyaan mission. If the test is successful, it will pave the way for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission in late 2023, followed by the first manned mission in 2024.
