Ramesh Singh, Executive Director, Dena Bank, in an exclusive interview with Anil Singhvi, Managing Editor, Zee Business, said this merger is beneficial for the bank as well as its customers. The merger process is likely to be completed in the next 3- to-6 months.
It needs to be noted that, Bank of Baroda is seen as a strong bank, while Vijaya Bank slightly better and Dena Bank is the weakest entity in the group.
The decision by government, which owns majority stakes in 21 banks, to merge the three banks will first need to be approved by each of the bank's board of directors, and then an amalgamation scheme would be prepared.
The bad loans of five associate banks of SBI as on March 31, 2017 were about Rs 65,000 crore and that of SBI Rs 112,000 crore -- that is a total of Rs 177,000 crore, he reportedly said, adding that after the merger, SBI's bad loans in 2018 increased to Rs 225,000 crore.

The Government of India is all set to make fewer and stronger PSBs in the coming months - as an move to tackle their non-performing assets (NPAs). A list of total 21 PSBs are considered to become 10 - 12 banks.
