World Economic Forum: India's International Confidence Hits High, Says RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, speaking at the World Economic Forum 2024, highlighted a surge in international confidence towards India. He cited the National Statistics Office (NSO) revising India's FY23 growth projection to 7.3%, surpassing the RBI's own 7% estimate, as evidence of this positive sentiment. Additionally, Das expressed optimism for FY24, stating he "senses" India's GDP growth will reach 7%.

Even as the three-day RBI MPC meeting has started on Wednesday, all eyes are on the interest rate-setting panel’s decision on Friday. Experts, however, expect a status quo on the key policy rates as inflation is gradually coming closer to the RBI’s target level and economic growth is picking up. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das-headed Monetary Policy Committee has begun its three-day deliberations on December 6. Das would unveil the decision of the six-member MPC on the last day of the meeting--December 8 (10.00 AM).

Rs 2,000 notes were issued soon after demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes was announced on November 8, 2016. Rs 200 notes were launched in August, 2017. There are about Rs 6.70 lakh crore of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation and the Reserve Bank of India has stopped printing fresh ones, economic affairs secretary Subhash C Garg stated on April 17. Bankers say there have been a few cases of mutilated notes coming up in the new series but they added that this could become an issue if the concerned law is not amended soon.
