Only a little over a month after Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) was directed to move as many as 13 India Premiere League (IPL) matches out of Maharashtra state due to acute water shortage, the Supreme Court has refused to cut complete supply of water to distilleries and breweries.
It was only in April when the cricket board was asked to shift the IPL completely out of the state in the wake of the drought in several regions. As many as 13 matches were then shifted out to Bengaluru.
Now, the Supreme Court has struck down a petition seeking a complete on water supply to liquor manufacturers in the state. An earlier interim order had asked the state to curtail water supply by 60% to these distilleries.
"Why are you coming against an interim order of the high court? The high court has already allowed 60%, now what do you want? These are all policy decisions. There has to be a balance," was the bench's retort, according to a PTI report.
On the other hand, BCCI's was asked to move the matches even after its offer that both, the Mumbai and Pune IPL franchises would contribute Rs 5 crore each, to the Chief Minister drought relief fund.
